First round for Kirk. 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 [Interesting that Kirk would play this. I would have tried something like 3.c3 to stem the long diagonal. I guess he saw the guy's repetoire was the Accelerated Dragon (from a book we looked at before the game), so this was a safe move.] 3...cxd4 [3...Bg7 is a move order trick.] 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.c4 So now we go to the Maroczy Bind. It's strong theoretically, but I don't find it particularly hard to play against as Black 5...Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Nc3 0-0 [7...Ng4 8.Qxg4 Nxd4 9.Qd1 Ne6 is the mainline(9...e5 is a sideline as well) ] 8.Be2 e5? I don't see the idea here. Blocking off his own bishop and moving the knight to a better square. [8...d6 transposing to a dragon with c4 included.;
The double-fianchetto with 8...b6 is another option.] 9.Ndb5 [Fritz liked 9.Nc2 d6 10.0-0 but Kirk's line was more direct.] 9...a6 [9...b6 10.Nd6 Ba6 may have been better for Black but White still controls everything. ] 10.Nd6 Ne8 11.0-0 b6 [11...Nd4 may have been a little better. 12.Nxc8 Rxc8 because White can never really take the knight and unleash the Dragon Bishop] 12.c5 Nd4 13.Nd5 bxc5 14.Nxc8 Nxe2+ 15.Qxe2 Qxc8?? [15...Rxc8 16.Qxa6 Rc6 is still good for White, but definitely better than the text.] 16.Ne7+ Kh8 17.Nxc8 I thought Kirk did well punishing Black for his ...e5. Never gave him a chance. 0-1

Wow I just played this game over in its entirety and kirk really got outplayed this game. Let's see if I can find some improvements. 1.d4 e6 Like I said from our game, he's played this move order since 2003. [A stronger line v. Kees is something like 1...c5 2.c3 cxd4 3.cxd4 d5 which transposes to the Slav Exchange. Kirk assumed that he wouldn't play the Colle v. 1.d4 e6. is it better to play the opponent than the board?] 2.e3 c5 3.c3 cxd4 [Now it's not best to try and transpose into a Slav Exchange/Caro Exchange since his line would be one with ...e6 in. 3...d5 may be better at this point.] 4.cxd4 Nf6 not sure why he's avoiding ...d5. I think he should go for the ...b6, ...Bb7, ...Bb4+, ...d5 setup and just keep a strong center and beat him. 5.Bd3 Be7 6.Nc3 [Maybe punish Kirk for avoiding d5 and play 6.e4 immediately] 6...b6 7.Nf3 Bb7 8.0-0 d6 9.h3 [Again Black has been begging for White to play 9.e4 for the past 5 moves or so] 9...Nbd7 10.Re1 0-0 11.e4! Finally. Kirk decided to play ...d6 and ...e5 but i'm not sure why. 11...e5 12.Bc4 Rc8 13.Bb3 exd4 14.Nxd4 Nc5 15.Bc2 a6 16.Qf3 b5 17.a3 All through here he should've played ...d5, particularly with the pin on the queen 17...Qb6 18.Nf5 [18.Be3 putting the pin on as well as uniting his rooks. Kees has had funny development, but Kirk didn't seem too worried about exchanging of fhis isolated pawn.] 18...Rfe8 19.Qg3 Nh5? [19...Ne6 was better but after 20.Nd5 it's still tough] 20.Nxe7+ [20.Qg4 wins in all variations 20...g6 21.Nd5! Qd8 22.Nfxe7+ Rxe7 23.Bg5] 20...Rxe7 21.Qh4 Nf6 22.Bg5 Re6 23.Bxf6 Rxf6 24.e5 Rh6 25.Qg4 Re8 26.exd6 Rhe6 27.Rxe6 Rxe6 28.Bf5 Rxd6 29.Re1 Ne6 30.Qh4 g6 [30...h6 is just as good] 31.Be4 Kg7 32.Bxb7 Qxb7 33.Ne4 g5?? [33...Rc6 34.Qf6+ Kg8 looked bad but 33. ...g5 was a bad blunder. Kirk missed the same things i miss...the same piece moving twice, between this game and the game v. me. The move just gave up a pawn at worst (what Kees played). I'm curious what Kirk's idea was.] 34.Nxg5? [34.Nxd6 gxh4 (34...Qxg2+ 35.Kxg2 gxh4) 35.Nxb7 is much better.] 34...Nxg5 35.Qxg5+ Rg6 I walked by at this position and all i saw was that if he moved the queen it was mate in one. 36.Qe5+ Of course 36...f6 37.Qe7+ Qxe7 38.Rxe7+ Kh6 and White eventually wins, right? I saw that Kees had less than 2 minutes and didn't seem like he was in a hurry and was calmly recording his moves...so... 39.Ra7 f5 40.b4 Re6 41.Rd7 Kg6 42.Rd8 Re5 and White lost on time. 0-1 Not the strongest game by Kirk.

I decided to give Kirk the game v. Aaron this round because he made a big point before the tournament how he was undefeated as White for so long etc. etc. Also he had a tough game v. Kees the previous round so I thought that this would be a good test of how he handles his emotions. 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 The Kan. Kirk said after the game that this was one of the few holes in his repertoire. 5.Bd3 [Before the game, Aaron showed me some of the theory from his Kan book. This included 5.c4 g6?! which I thought was odd.] 5...Nf6 6.0-0 Qc7 7.c4 Bc5 [Theory is 7...Nc6 . I find continuting a position like this tough for Black. Deciding what to do with the d-pawn and how to develop the bishops. I prefer White's position here.] 8.Nb3 [8.Nc2 is another choice] 8...Be7 9.Be3N [An interesting novelty (accordign to Megabase and Chessgames.com) by Kirk. Never been played before, but I think it's as good as theory 9.Nc3 ] 9...d6 Kirk has to be happy with his position here. 10.N1d2 [10.Nc3 was probably better, to free the d2 square for the other knight] 10...b6 11.f4 Nbd7 12.Rc1 [Although I would be more comfortable as White, I can imagine this is the sort of position that bothers Kirk. There are no real weaknesses or obvious attacking plans for White. Kirk has repeatedly told me how much he hates maneuvring. Fritz recommended 12.Qf3 with the obvious threat of 12...-- 13.e5 but even still 13...Bb7 14.exd6 Bxd6 looks okay for Black] 12...Bb7 13.Nd4?! [Maybe 13.Qe2 is better. This position shows the difference between Nc3 and Nd2. I think impatience made Kirk play 13.Nd4 and try and "force" something because of the limited mobility of the knight on b3.] 13...Nc5 14.Be2? [Dropping a pawn. 14.Bc2 Ncxe4 15.Nxe4 Bxe4 16.Bxe4 Nxe4 17.f5 is still kinda tough. ] 14...Ncxe4 15.Bf3 [15.Qa4+ Qd7 16.Qxd7+ Nxd7 may have lessened the tension a bit] 15...0-0 16.Qc2 Nc5 17.b4 Ncd7 18.f5 [18.Rfe1 aiming at the e-pawn ] 18...e5 19.Ne2 [19.Bxb7 exd4 20.Bxa8 dxe3 21.Rfe1 exd2 22.Qxd2 and there's lots of tricks] 19...Rac8 20.Qb2? [20.Qb1 was better but Black is still better.] 20...e4 and Kirk eventually lost. The game was interesting but Kirk had no solid plan and no idea of how to create something. Let's see if I can figure out a plan : maybe 8.Nc2 and Nc3 would be easier to play. All of White's play should be on the queenside here, and the knights were stepping on each other in the line he played. It would have been much easier to mobilize the queenside pawns with the knights on c2 and c3 v. d2 and b2. Or even Nc3 and Nd2 (as i said) to control the center a little more. It's hard to say. 0-1

Kirk wanted to drop out before this game. I'm glad he didn't. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 I knew Kirk was disappointed with the Philidor but luckily he was able to transpose. 3.d4 Nc6 4.Bb5! [4.d5 was a possibility as well, but i think the transposition to the Steinitz is good] 4...Bd7 5.0-0 a6 [5...Nf6 was better.] 6.Ba4 [6.Bxc6 was another try. Kirk understandably wanted to avoid giving up the bishop pair and try to get a "normal" closed Lopez] 6...Nf6 7.Re1 h6? [I wonder if something like 7...b5 8.Bb3 Be7 9.c3 would have been better. Bg5 is rarely a serious threat in the Lopez.] 8.c3 Bg4 9.Nbd2!? [9.dxe5 dxe5 10.Qxd8+ Rxd8 11.Nxe5 b5 and;
9.Bxc6+ bxc6 10.dxe5 dxe5 11.Qxd8+ Rxd8 12.Nxe5 both grab a pawn] 9...exd4 10.cxd4 b5 11.Qc2!? I bet Elmer didn't expect that 11...Nb4 12.Qc3 bxa4 13.Qxb4 Bd7 14.e5 dxe5 15.Rxe5+ With the advantage of development and the black king stuck in the center, White has to be better. 15...Be6 16.Qxa4+ Nd7? [16...Qd7 was much better] 17.d5 Bd6 18.dxe6 fxe6 [18...Bxe5 19.Nxe5 fxe6 20.Qc6 is good for White too] 19.Rxe6+ Kf7 20.Nd4 Ne5 21.Ne4 [21.Qb3 putting the pin back on is good too] 21...Qh4 22.Nf5 Nf3+ 23.gxf3? [23.Kf1 not taking the knight was much better 23...Nxh2+ 24.Ke1] 23...Qxh2+ 24.Kf1 Qh3+ 25.Ke2 Kxe6 26.Nxg7+ [26.Qb3+! is much stronger 26...Kd7 (26...Kxf5 27.Qf7+ Ke5 28.Bf4+ Kd4 29.Rd1#) 27.Qf7+ Kd8 28.Nexd6 cxd6 29.Qe7+ Kc8 30.Nxd6+ Kb8 31.Qb7#] 26...Kf7 27.Qc4+?? [27.Bxh6 Qxh6 28.Qd7+ Be7 is better] 27...Kxg7 28.Qd4+ Kg6? [28...Kh7 was better] 29.Qf6+ Kh7 [29...Kh5 30.Bxh6! is still horribly winning for White] 30.Qf7# An open crazy game by Kirk. He went for the knock out with 27.Qc4+ and miscalculated. We both need to work harder on tactics both at home and OTB. 1-0
